Community service is an opportunity for our Club to examine and respond to the needs of the less fortunate in our community, to show our concern for those who are handicapped or deprived and to give practical assistance and encouragement to those in need.
We try and strike a balance between acts of personal service by Rotarians, which demand mainly time and energy but only relatively small amounts of cash, and larger fund raising schemes.
Here are some examples of community service by Club members:
The Stroke Association
High blood pressure can be a cause of a stroke, The Stroke Association Know Your Blood Pressure Day is held annually in April. The club in conjunction with Enfield Red Cross encourage members of the public to have their blood pressure checked at St Andrew's Church Hall in Southgate. Hundreds of people are checked each year and a manyr are referred to their GP for further tests. See more HERE
Evening Pub Outing
Every year we take members of Southgate Homebound to a pub in Hertfordshire for an evening of socialising.
Christmas Collections
Every year club members stand outside supermarkets, come rain or shine, collecting money from the shoppers for local and international charities.
An Example of what we do.....
Hands Across the Pond Project - Working together to Make Dreams Real
Rotary International President 2008-9, Dong Kurn Lee, challenged clubs to curb child mortality through the provision of basic needs projects for children. The Southgate Rotary Club of Michigan USA decided to use its local funds to collect and distribute diapers and formula to impoverished families and families with infants who have severe medical conditions or developmental delays.
This project includes a simultaneous basic needs project by the Rotary Club of Southgate England. The Michigan club donated $500 (US) to the club for the purpose of providing baby formula and diapers (nappies), or similar needs, to impoverished families in their club area. Southgate Rotary in London identified two community agencies for collaboration on this project. The Children and Young People health visiting service which works with a diverse population of children aged 0 - 5 and their families in Enfield providing antenatal and postnatal care, advice and support. They requested Rotary's support in providing safety equipment such as stair gates and plug socket covers. The Young Parents Project in Edmonton, England works with vulnerable young parents during the ante and post natal stages. They are working to prevent "cot death" or sudden infant death syndrome. They requested support in providing room thermometers to distribute to the young parents.
